The object of our synagogue is to maintain a daily place of worship practicing the Syrian liturgical custom. We seek to serve Sepharadim and Mizrahim of diverse origins and of a variety of age groups living in downtown Manhattan. Through Torah-classes and a range of volunteer kindness and social events, we seek to foster a tight-knit community and to nourish the cultural and creative aspects of our tradition.
MDUS began in 2001 out of the second floor of a Young Israel synagogue on 16th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The kanîs was born out of the need for Sepharadim living in the area to practice their own unique customs. We completed a renovation of our space in the summer of 2008 and we are one of the sole mizrahî options for a wide downtown area encompassing such diverse neighborhoods as Union Square, the West and East Village, Flatiron, Chelsea, Gramercy, SoHo and Tribeca.
From hospital-visiting to coat drives, MDUS seeks to give back to the downtown Manhattan community.
MDUS also celebrates our heritage by having cultural events. MDUS hosted a sukkå concert featuring prominent cantors (hazzånîm) singing distinct Middle Eastern poems (ποιητής or piyyûtîm). MDUS continually hosts special art exhibitions showcasing new art of members of our community.
